What a PEO
Can Do for You

BY BRUCE E. KATZ

More than ever before, CPAs are advising their bottom-line-conscious employers to use outsourcing to cut costs and improve efficiency. Once confined to production-related areas, outsourcing has grown to encompass a broad range of business operations. Human resources and payroll are two areas companies traditionally kept within their control, but over time businesses have gradually begun to outsource payroll functions to service bureaus and turn over more employee-related responsibilities to professional employer organizations (PEOs). CPAs and other financial executives whose employers do not already use PEOs should understand how they work—and how to select the right one—so they can decide whether the PEO route is a good solution for their companies.

TRAVERSE CITY - Running a small business is a really big job. It requires more than a good business idea and the courage to pursue it; it also requires compliance with myriad laws and regulations and proper human resources management.

According to government sources, most small businesses are operating without an adequately trained human resources staff and many of those, without anyone at all.

The Small Business Association estimates that business owners spend up to 25% of their time handling employee-related paperwork alone.

And according to AccessPoint, a professional employer organization (PEO), on average, the small-business entrepreneur is interrupted during their daily tasks once every nine minutes to attend to matters related to personnel.

A New Approach to Employee Retention

[Source: Grant Thornton, A major U.S. accounting, tax, and management consulting firm – http://www.grantthornton.com]

The key to employee retention for many companies is to outsource some or all of their human resource functions.
According to research recently conducted, as part of the Grant Thornton Business Owners Council, attracting and retaining talented employees is the number-one issue facing business owners in the United States. However, many companies have neither the time nor the experience to create the necessary infrastructure for human resources services.
To address their human-resource needs, these companies increasingly are outsourcing certain functions to professional employer organizations (PEO's), companies that offer an integrated, cost-effective approach to human resources management and administration. PEO's assume substantial contractual employer rights, responsibilities and risk, and establish and maintain an employer relationship with the workers assigned to their clients.
